"Indian Civilization and Culture" has been written by Mahatma Gandhi. He wrote many stories, essays. This is one of them. He successfully used truth and non-violence as the main weapon against the British to liberate India.

In this essay, he has tried to distinguish between Indian Civilization and Modern Civilization. According to him, Modern Civilization teaches the lesson of materiality while Indian Civilization teaches that 'Simple living and High Thinking'.

He believes that Indian civilization is unique and the civilization that India has developed is unbeatable in the world. Gandhiji makes a clear comparison between Western and Indian civilization.

Our ancestors followed the principle and lived a happy life. They did not run behind money and that is why they were satisfied. In Modern civilization, people have become greedy. According to Mahatma Gandhi, "Mind is a restless bird, the more it gets the more it wants and still remains unsatisfied".

In this essay, Gandhiji refuses to imitate Western civilization blindly. He says that it is the duty of every Indian to follow the high ideals of Indian civilization.

"भारतीय सभ्यता एवं संस्कृति" हमारे राष्ट्रपिता महात्मा गाँधी के द्वारा लिखा गया हैं। उन्होंने बहुत सारी कहानियाँ और लेखों को लिखा है। यह उनमें से एक हैं।

इस लेख में उन्होंने भारतीय संस्कृति और आधुनिक संस्कृति के बीच अंतर बताने का प्रयास किया हैं। उनके अनुसार आधुनिक संस्कृति हमें वस्तुवाद का पाठ पढ़ाती हैं जबकि भारतीय संस्कृति हमें साधारण जीवन जीने और उच्च विचार रखनें (या सोचने) का पाठ पढ़ाती हैं। 

हमारे पूर्वज सिद्धांतो का अनुसरण किये और एक सुखद जीवन व्यतीत किये। वे पैसों के पीछे नहीं भागे और यही कारण है कि वे संतुष्ट थे। भारतीय संस्कृति में लोग लालची बन गए हैं।

महात्मा गाँधी के अनुसार, "मन एक बैचेन पक्षी के सामान होता हैं, यह जितना पता है उससे कहीं ज्यादा यह चाहता है फिर भी असंतुष्ट रहता हैं।"
