Fire-Hymn Summary in English

“Fire-Hymn” is a religious poem. It has been composed by Keki N Daruwala, an eminent Indo-Anglian poet.

In this poem, the poet vividly and realistically describes the scene of a burning ghat where the dead body is burnt. Sometimes, the dead body is not completely burnt to ashes. It presents a terrible scene and seems that the fire fails to perform its duty well.

It has been insincere to the task. The poet belongs to the parse community which worships fire as a god. The poet comes to such a ghat to cremate his own son because the nearest Tower of Silence was thousand miles away. Doing so was a sig against the Parse Religion.

Thus, the poem is beset with irony and satire against religious rituals. The language of the poem is simple and its style is lucid. No difficult words have been used in it . It inspires us to have faith in our religion.

शमशान घाट का दृश्य सामान्य था। मृतक जल रहे थे । वहाँ भूतों जैसा श्वेत प्रकाश था, जिससे आने - जाने वाले डरते थे। एक दिन, जब वक्ता बच्चा था, वह और उसका पिता नदी तट के समीप शमशान घाट के पास से गुज़रे। आग बुझ गई थी, चिंगारियों की गर्म लालिमा समाप्त हो गई थी और उन पर सुरमई राख जम गई थी। एक शरीर के अधजले अंग और उंगलियाँ थीं। वक्ता के पिता ने संकेत दिया कि कभी - कभी आग लापरवाह हो जाती है। वह मृतकों को पूरी तरह जलाना भूल जाती है। वक्ता को इस बात से पीड़ा हुई। उसने आग को भूलने के पाप से बचाने का निश्चय किया। बीस वर्ष पश्चात् वक्ता का ज्येष्ठ बच्चा मर गया। उसने उसका शरीर आग को सौंपा , और देखा कि उसने उसे पूरी तरह जला दिया। अग्नि - मंत्र ने उसके इस गैर - पारसी कार्य को क्षमा कर दिया क्योंकि ऐसा लगता था कि उसने यह कार्य जानबूझकर नहीं बल्कि मजबूरी से किया था। शाँति का स्तम्भ वहाँ से हज़ार मील दूर था। वक्ता को लगा कि उसका उद्देश्य निष्फल हो गया था। उसने शपथ ली कि वह अग्नि को क्षमा के पाप से भी बचाएगा।
